For most of us the sauna is where the session winds down. The warm, quiet room at the end. The reward for the hard part. Sit, sweat, breathe out, leave.

That version gets the room almost exactly backwards. In the research, heat is not the wind down. It is one of the more interesting things you can ask of your body on purpose, and one of the very few with two decades of population data sitting behind it.

This is Part Two of The Other Age, our series on the gap between the age on your licence and the age your body is actually keeping. Last time, the premise. This time, the oldest lever anyone has for it: getting hot, deliberately, and often.

Heat is doing something. The question worth keeping is exactly how much.

Twenty years of data, from the country that would know

The dataset most people point to when they talk about heat and longevity comes from Finland, a country with close to one sauna per household and the patience to follow people for a very long time. Beginning in the 1980s, researchers in eastern Finland tracked a large group of middle-aged men and recorded, among many other things, how often each of them used a traditional sauna. Then they waited. Across roughly twenty years, the most frequent users and the least frequent users had told noticeably different stories.

Two things sit under those numbers, and they matter. This was an observational study: it found an association, not proof that heat caused the difference, and frequent sauna users can differ in other ways. It looked at traditional Finnish sauna, in one population. It describes a pattern across a group over twenty years. It does not describe what any single session does for any one person.

How to read a number like that

A figure like forty per cent is easy to misread, so it is worth slowing down on it. This was an observational study. It watched what people already did; it did not assign anyone to a sauna. That matters, because the people who sat in a hot room four times a week were probably unlike the people who went once, in more ways than the sauna alone. They may have had more time, fewer competing health problems, or simply a steadier life. Good researchers adjust for what they can measure. They cannot adjust for everything. So the honest reading is an association, a pattern that held across a large group over a long time, and not a promise that heat, by itself, moved the needle.

It is also worth knowing what the word frequent actually meant here. The heaviest users in that Finnish cohort tended to sit in a traditional dry sauna four to seven times a week, for something in the order of twenty minutes at a time. That is the habit the numbers describe. It is a description of the study, not a prescription for you.

Why heat might do anything at all

If the association is real, what could be behind it? Here the story moves from data to theory, and it helps to be clear which is which. The leading idea is an old one in biology: hormesis, the notion that a controlled dose of a stressor can prompt the body to adapt to it. Heat is a clean example of a stressor you recover from rather than one that simply wears you down.

Researchers have pointed to heat shock proteins as one proposed pathway, a family of molecules the body produces under heat stress that help other proteins hold their shape. That work is largely mechanistic, drawn from animal models and short human studies, and it describes a plausible route rather than a proven one. It is the reason the sauna is taken seriously in the longevity conversation at all. It is not, on its own, evidence of an outcome.

The honest edge

Here is the part most wellness writing leaves out. Heat is one of the most studied recovery habits there is, but almost all of that research is about the heart and lifespan, not about an epigenetic clock, where the direct evidence stays thin.

So the accurate version is also the more interesting one. The Finnish work is genuinely strong for what it measured. It is not, on its own, proof that heat winds a biological clock backwards, and that is the honest place to leave it.

Not all heat is the same stimulus

There is one more wrinkle, and it is the reason thin is the fair word rather than a modest one. The research that has looked directly at heat and the epigenetic clock has mostly studied a different kind of heat entirely: the ambient, inescapable heat of a warming climate. A 2025 study in Science Advances examined blood from more than three and a half thousand older adults in the United States and found that those living through more very hot days showed faster epigenetic ageing, not slower. The authors read it as a maladaptive response to a heat the body could not get away from.

That is a world apart from a chosen twenty minutes in a room you step out of when you like. A dose you control and recover from is not the same stimulus as a heat you cannot escape. But it does mean the small pool of direct clock evidence on heat is not simply thin. Part of it points the other way. Anyone who tells you the science plainly shows a sauna turning your clock back is reading past the actual state of it.

The honest answer

Heat is one of the best-studied recovery habits there is, with strong long-term data on the heart and lifespan, and, as yet, little direct evidence that it moves a biological clock in either direction on purpose.
